DAY 18 — The Pearl: Knowing Him
“I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead.” — Philippians 3:10 (NLT)
Treasure to Possess
The pearl of knowing Him is the privilege of experiencing Jesus through intimacy, friendship, and personal fellowship, not merely learning more information about Him. I exchange religious activity for living communion and knowing about Christ for continually knowing Christ more deeply.
The Pearl of Knowing Him
After everything Paul had experienced, accomplished, and learned, his deepest desire could still be expressed in three simple words: “that I may know Him.” Paul already knew Jesus, yet he understood there was always more of Christ to discover, experience, and enjoy.
Christianity is not primarily about mastering doctrines, memorizing verses, attending services, or accumulating biblical information. Those things are valuable, but they are intended to lead us to a Person. We can know many facts about Jesus while still missing the joy of truly knowing Him.
Sometimes even saying a sinner’s prayer can leave someone misinformed about genuine Christianity if they believe repeating the prayer was the destination. Jesus said, “You must be born again.” — John 3:7 (NKJV) We are not merely invited to repeat words, join a church, or adopt Christian habits; we receive new life in Christ by the Holy Spirit and begin walking with Him.
This raises an important question: Have I simply participated in Christian activity, or have I truly received the life of Christ? Religious activity can teach us how to act Christian, but only the new birth gives us the life of Christ within.
The real Christian life is not merely religious activity; it is life with Jesus. Prayer becomes communion, Scripture becomes a place of hearing His heart, worship becomes loving response, and obedience flows from knowing the One we follow.
This is the exchanged life. Jesus does not merely give us principles to follow; He gives us Himself. He becomes our life, our Source, our wisdom, our strength, and our constant companion through the Holy Spirit.
Knowing Him becomes very practical. Before making a decision, I can ask, “Jesus, what are You saying?” When someone hurts me, I can ask, “How do You want to love them through me?” When fear rises, I can turn my attention toward His presence instead of continually rehearsing the problem.
Sometimes we approach prayer mainly with a list of things we need God to do. There is nothing wrong with bringing our needs to Him, but intimacy deepens when we also come simply because we want Him. We can worship, listen, sit quietly in His presence, read His Word slowly, and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus to our hearts.
Paul’s desire challenges us to examine what we are pursuing most intensely. It is possible to seek God’s blessings more than God, His answers more than His presence, His power more than His heart, or ministry success more than knowing Him. Yet every lesser pursuit finds its proper place when Jesus Himself becomes our treasure.
What a beautiful exchange. I release activity without intimacy, information without encounter, and the pursuit of what Jesus can give me for the greater treasure of knowing Jesus Himself.
Knowing Him also changes how we face difficulty. I may not know what God is doing, but I can know who He is. I may not understand the road, but I can trust the One walking with me, and that confidence remains even when explanations do not come.
A practical question to ask each morning is, “Jesus, how can I know You more today?” That may happen through Scripture, prayer, worship, obedience, serving someone, or simply becoming more aware of His presence in ordinary moments.
The pearl is not merely that I once prayed a prayer about Jesus. The pearl of knowing Him is that I have been born again into a living fellowship with Him, continually discovering His heart, enjoying His presence, and allowing His life to become increasingly visible through mine.
To possess this pearl, I refuse to settle for Christian activity as a substitute for knowing Christ. The great exchange is simple: I release everything that merely surrounds Jesus for the incomparable treasure of Jesus Himself.
Prayer of Faith
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You that You have invited me into a living fellowship with Jesus. Let my Christianity never become activity without intimacy, but a life of genuinely knowing and walking with Him.
Holy Spirit, reveal Jesus to me through Your Word, prayer, worship, and the ordinary moments of my day. Teach me to know His heart, enjoy His presence, and live from the new life I have received in Him.
I receive the pearl of knowing Him. I exchange activity without intimacy and knowledge without encounter for the surpassing treasure of knowing Jesus personally.
I am loved by You, precious Heavenly Father, filled with Your Holy Spirit, and alive in You, my precious Savior, Jesus Christ. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
